42. Writing to businesses/organizations

This project is a great way to recapture the lost art of letter writing.  Students will learn the importance of public relations in the business world and the value of their opinion.  (This idea of mine was published in the following textbook: Introduction to Business by Glencoe publishing.)

Assign students the task of bringing in the address/website/phone number (any will do), of the company of their choice.  They ultimately need the address, but this can be found through the other two means.  Next, have your students outline why they enjoy/like the product or service they have chosen.  Now, have them handwrite (demands a more personal response from the company) a letter to the company, using the information from their outline.  I always assigned a grade when they handed in the letter and extra credit when they brought the company’s response into class to read out loud.

Candy companies generally send samples in comparison to others, which may send coupons.  The response rate to these letters has always been overwhelmingly great.  Your students will really enjoy this!  The following resources
may be of assistance to you.
