Upon completion of a unit, my students choose a partner. I then explain to them that they will study together, take the exam individually, and receive as a grade, the average of their test scores.
I then give them three class periods to review the material they are to be tested on. The students may use any method they find effective (computer research, notes, oral quizzes, readings, etc.). I am there as a resource as well.
On the fourth day, I give them their test, which they take individually. The grade they receive is the average of the two scores from their group (example: scores of 60% and 80% result in a score of 70% for each student).
Students sometimes complain after the test that their partner let them down. They learn next time to work together and use their study time more efficiently. |
