71. Present or attend a conference
This can be an excellent way to learn something new and/or break up the routine. There is nothing better than discussing issues and learning from a “pool” of your peers presenting and sharing what they do on a day to day basis. My favorite conference format personally, is when there is a collection of workshops/sessions to choose from, and you select one per time slot. This way it is easy to find something interesting.
I strongly recommend finding a conference to present at if you think you do something unique or interesting in the classroom. Trust me, others will want to know. I have presented on several occasions on the topic of using movies/television in the classroom and on web design. Presenting often involves filing out a simple form and pending approval, you will be on your way.
It is very easy to barricade yourself in your classroom and not share with your own faculty, yet alone complete strangers. When teachers share ideas and information it is a win/win situation for everyone. Students learn, teachers feel a renewed sense of purpose, and administrators can claim credit for it all (just kidding). Besides, something simple you may do in your classroom that is interesting makes it all the more reason to share. Your idea could be implemented immediately.
By this time you are thinking, I don’t have time! Yes you do! If you feel you cannot leave your students for 1-2 days, then you definitely need to find a conference!
It is possible in this day and age, that funding may be a problem. You would be surprised that the money some schools have set aside for conferences, yet don’t openly share with there faculty. Just ask! If money is scarce, there is no reason you couldn’t drive to one for just the day and/or pay for it out of your own pocket. Your union may have some problem with it, but at least it will be tax deductible!
So what are you waiting for, find a conference and attend or present. The link below is a great way to begin looking for one!
