For teaching compare and contrast, I have created a 4-week writing unit plan that teaches the concepts using real-life things that interest them.
I start out by giving the students a survey to determine the T.V. shows and movies they watch, the video games they play, etc. I use this survey to help create the different things they will compare and contrast.
After giving them background information on the concepts involved, I read an excerpt (a writing piece) that compares and contrasts Spongebob and Squidward. This grabs their attention immediately and their participation is phenomenal! We then create a T-chart listing the similarities and differences.
The next lesson has them working in teams to read websites that compare and contrast non-fiction articles about different types of animals.
Another lesson in the unit involves them comparing and contrasting (first in groups with a T-chart and then individually through a writing piece), two of their favorite sports, T.V. shows, movies, video game systems, and pop stars.
