To reinforce finding the prime factorization of a number, put the kids in groups of four and assign each a set of cards (2's, 3's, 5's, or blanks to write on). Give the class a number to build a factor tree for and students place the cards on the desk in the form of the tree (the person with blanks fills in all of the missing numbers).
The key to this activity is that the students are not allowed to talk to each other or use hand motions. They are allowed to nod or shake their heads at each other to keep all students engaged.
It's so much fun to watch the students communicate without the use of their voices. They get so excited and frustrated at the same time, but end up being very good at finding the prime factorization of numbers. |
